Week 5

Week 5
This week I found one new organism that appeared in large numbers. This organism was a Pinnularia sp. (Carter-Lund, Lund 1995). They are a green photosynthetic algae. They were near the bottom of my aquarium and drifted around. The Aeolosoma sp. are every where in my aquarium(Ward & Whipple 1918). There numbers have grown significantly. They move around all over the tank. The Spiro Gyra sp. have grown very long(Rainis and Russell 1996. There are three individual Spiro Gyra sp. at the bottom of the tank. They are green and non-motile. There were Bodo sp. at the top of the tank(Rainis and Russell 1996). They are not green, and motile. I am still surprised about the lack of species diversity, but I think it can be explained by the hostile takeover of the Aeolosoma sp.

Week 4

I was shocked by what I saw this week in my aquarium. There was a lack of species diversity. the Aeolosoma sp. have completely taken over my aquarium (Ward & Whipple 1918). They are everywhere. They are at the top of the tank, the bottom of the tank, on the plants and everywhere in between. They eat all the other organisms. I only saw two other species of organisms. One was Spiro Gyra sp(Rainis and Russell 1996).. It was green, non- motile, and at the bottom of the tank. I then saw Bodo sp., which were at the top of the tank, moving around, and were not green(Rainis and Russell 1996).. The plants in the tank have also turned brown this week.

Week 3 of the Micro Aquarium Project

A Beta Food Pellet was added to the aquarium this week. It contained ""Atison's Betta Food" made
by Ocean Nutrition, Aqua Pet Americas, 3528 West 500 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84104. Ingredients: Fish meal, wheat flower, soy meal, krill meal, minerals, vitamins and preservatives. Analysis: Crude Protein 36%; Crude fat 4.5%; Crude Fiber 3.5%; Moisture 8% and Ash 15%" (McFarland, 2013).  This week there was less activity around the plants and more activity around the Beta food pellet. This week I saw a lack of species diversity. Round worms named Aeolosoma sp. The round worms were the only organism that were around the plants. The were moving and searching for food, and have taken over my aquarium (Ward & Whipple 1918).  I think they are eating the other micro organisms, and that is why there is a lack of species diversity this week.I did see Cyeno Bacteria and Bodos that were there last week.(Rainis and Russell 1996). I saw a green photosynthetic organism called Closterium sp. (Carter-Lund, Lund 1995). It was stationary and was floating towards the top of the aquarium. Near the the Beta Food pellets, I also saw Colpidium moving around in circles(Patterson 1996). It was transparent in color
